Central Sterile Processing is an ancillary department of the Operating rooms within a healthcare facility in which medical/surgical supplies and equipment, both sterile and non-sterile, are decontaminated, processed, sterilized, stored and used for patient care. All this takes place behind the scenes in a sterile lab type setting. The CSPD supervisor role is vital in successfully managing the workflow and productivity, it is essential to many of the operational aspects of the department such as ordering supplies, instrument maintenance/repair, department audits, and Periop CM's daily/weekly/monthly needs.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports leadership while performing as an integral part of OR team with additional job requirements and expanded supervision. Demonstrates accountability for operating room readiness ensuring sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable supplies are complete and ready for a procedure prior to the preceding patient leaving the operating room. Responsible for the proper care and handling of all general and specialty instrumentation including the cleaning, decontamination, disassemble/reassembly, budget, quality assurance, instrument identification, set assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instrumentation for PeriOp Services, hospital departments, and clinics.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Determines, coordinates, and supervises daily staffing assignments. Provides direction, assists in providing a comprehensive departmental orientation to all new hires. Accesses learning needs of staff and collaborates with vendors and management to develop training programs on an ongoing basis. Ensures staff compliance with regulatory requirements and departmental or organizational policies and procedures.

2. Reviews schedule ahead of time to ensure tray availability, discuss with OR manager or Service Line Leader if there any issues with regards to equipment/tray availability, participates in department huddles along with OR huddle participation. Participates in staffing when needed. Interacts with other departments and outside clinics that are supported by CSPD.

3. Selects, trains and manages staff. Schedules staff in accordance with department needs, maintains labor expenses within budget guidelines. Provides daily direction to staff. Sets goals for individuals and for the team. Acts as a mentor and coach and provides development and growth opportunities for staff, (shared responsibility supervisor/Sr manager).

4. Monitors supplies, equipment, surgical instrumentation, and labor resources staying within budget. Able to provide budget variance reasons for expense overrides. Assists in developing budgets, goals, targets, and action plans and provide input to policies and procedures.

5. Identifies, addresses and communicates opportunities to improve work processes and enable achievement of goals in quality, productivity and customer satisfaction. Maintains statistics and reports on activity in areas responsible for when required.

6. Coordinates and participates in special projects as assigned. Obtains vendor quotes for surgical instruments to meet both daily and new services working with surgeons to develop service line needs and inventory levels to meet demands. Able to address future expense needs for volume driven instrumentation increases to provide sufficient inventory supporting surgical procedure daily volume without delay.

7. Works under general supervision. Incumbents in this position are accountable for the daily performance of a shift(s) unit(s) or team(s). Makes decisions guided by policies and procedures. Interacts primarily with direct reports, supervisor(s), operating room nursing, surgical scrub technicians, surgeons and customers both internal campus wide customers, and external clinics/patients supported areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.

Requires national certification as a SPD Technician.

Three years as a sterile processing technician. Must be proficient and have working knowledge in area of service. Must demonstrate effective communication, team building, human relations and organization skills. Must be familiar with commonly used office software and/or have the ability to learn new software applications if necessary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior supervisory experience is preferred.

Associates degree in business or management.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
